John Wayne Airport (SNA) used to be originally named Orange County Airport, but it changed its name in 1979 in honor of movie star John Wayne who was born in Newport Beach and died earlier the same year.

I have always believed the pilot maxim that you cannot have too much fuel when on fire. But there is a catch. First, you must be able to lift the weight in the air, and secondly, you must be able to stop the cargo on landing.

These are two simple requirements. But, it is not so. Let’s now look at the second requirement, stopping distance.


Since last month, I have flown to Santa Ana’s John Wayne-Orange County Airport. It’s my choice, and I like the generally pleasant weather and the ease of getting in and out. From Gerry’s Wood-Fired Dogs and Ruby’s amazing turkey burgers, the food options rival those at San Francisco International. But I digress.

Today, I fly the 737-800 from DFW (SNA), and about 2 hours after takeoff, I will call Flight Dispatch to ask him, “What fuel load do you plan today?” He will reply, “I don’t know.”

Because the flight planning system doesn’t issue fuel loads until an hour before takeoff, I know that. We arrive one hour before the flight as the crew and the fuel has already been pumped into our jet. SNA has a unique problem that I would like to address. This is because the power at certain California airports is costly, with taxes and surcharges. It makes sense to “ferry fuel” into these airports.


This means that if I require an arrival fuel of 5,200 pounds to be able to divert or turn around options at the destination, we fill up to this amount, then add “ferry fuel” or an additional upload to make it less expensive, less frequent, and to pay less in taxes and fees for the return flight.

The problem is that SNA has a relatively short runway (at 5,700 feet, DFW at 13,000). This makes stopping distance critical.

While extra fuel can save money on refueling (yes, it requires higher fuel consumption inbound due to the added weight), we still need to have enough stopping distance.


The maximum weight of the jet on landing is 144,000 pounds. This means that the runway requires 5,300 feet to reach the stop point from a dry runway. I ignore headwinds which can be favorable, and disallow tailwind adjustments: at 144,000 lbs, I need zero-I’m not even trivial with a 400-foot margin touching to down at 150 knots.

My effort in calling Dispatch was to intervene in numbers: Do NOT plan maximum “savings” ferry fuel until your zero fuel weight (passengers and cargo, empty jet-everything but fuel) is known.

Add the 144,000 maximum landing weight to the zero fuel weight, subtract the planned enroute gasoline burn, and then have a reasonable ferry fuel load.


The problem is that the “planned” fuel load, which doesn’t include this calculation because the zero fuel weight hasn’t yet been determined, is already aboard the jet by the time I reach it. If I calculate that we will arrive at the maximum landing weight of 3.5 tonnes, I have two options: defuel (lousy choice) before pushback or fly lower (dumb option) to reduce the landing weight.

Both are bad options: if we refuel, that fuel must be discarded-trashed-because quality assurance standards wisely say you cannot take energy from one aircraft’s tanks and meet the purity standards for another plane. This means you will have no income left and a delay in completing the defuel.

Although the “fly lower” option is possible, it’s not practical. We’ve spent thousands flying at 24,000 feet instead of 38,000 or 4000 feet to save fuel. It’s also noisier and bumpier lower down in the cumulus clouds.


Although I prefer the second option, I will always choose it. However, I don’t particularly appreciate landing at the highest structural limit of an airframe on the shortest runway. We can still save fuel and avoid dumping it in the trash.

If you have a longer runway like LAX, stopping distance would not be an issue. However, the 144,000-pound limit applies everywhere. It doesn’t matter where you land. One hundred forty-four thousand pounds is the maximum allowable. I will need to do some math before the fuel is put on the jet outbound.

The return is the second problem. Dispatch’s arrival fuel may be reduced to 5.0, which would be sufficient. But there is a catch. Because of the chop reported in Arizona at higher altitudes, he has planned us to fly at 29,000 feet. FL290 will have flight deviations due to weather or spacing if he is right. It will also be choppy.


Here’s what I do personally: I add another 1,000 to allow for extra time and distance flexibility in the event of turbulence. But I also plan on climbing to 39,000 feet immediately to check for choppy riding. Because I have flown through the airspace inbound, I know the winds and rides firsthand. The Dispatch and ATC reports can be hours out of date. This is also based on my 22-years as an airline captain. I know that we will take off at dusk, which means the thermodynamics of the entire air mass will change drastically.

Based on my intuition, I will climb to 39,000 and “take a hit.” The early climb will be more complex and require more fuel than a later step climb. However, my gut feeling says that we’ll be able to regain the same amount of energy and more by cruising longer at higher altitudes. You’ll notice that I didn’t use 41,000 because I am claiming a small pad due to the narrower range between high speed and low-speed buffet at the maximum altitude. Surfing the jet stream at higher altitudes can get you 510 knots or more incredible speeds across the ground. This is the reward of efficient flying.

If I am wrong, I added the fuel pad to the front. But I doubt it. You can fly lower (noisier and more crowded) and try the steep climb. This burns fuel, and you will regret it if the ride is terrible. We will still arrive at DFW in the worst-case scenario with a fuel pad.


If I am right, we will save a few thousand pounds on fuel eastbound due to the higher altitudes and lower fuel fats. To me, fuel is time, so more fuel is more important.

Unless, as I said, you are on fire or, more realistically, as I have just explained, you want to get the best result as efficiently as possible. Anything less than that is plain foolishness.
