Businesses offer goods and services based on other people’s needs. If there is a need for it globally, a business can supply it. Those who use the products or services can assess how well it is done using metrics such as quality and value. This is the “what.”

But what about the “how”?

Businesses can meet our needs only if they have the right motivation and employees. Let’s take the real estate industry as an example. Imagine a realtor motivated by making money and focused on increasing the number of real estate transactions each year. This person would also be hungry for the opportunity to be recognized as the best salesperson each year. What do this person’s drive, focus, and motivation say about them?

Let’s suppose you don’t know much about this person’s character, and you need to hire a realtor. It has been easier to find people since the advent of the internet. However, it is becoming harder to discern the good from the poor due to marketing hype. There are three main ways to find a realtor: searching online, getting referred by someone else, or choosing them based upon certain factors such as their sales history.

But, would you like to know if the realtor would put their mother under the bus if it were a way to make them money? Do you want to know if the person who referred you to a realtor is being paid for it? Do you want to learn more about the character of the realtor before doing business?

Confucius said, “Conduct guided only by profit causes to much complaint.” Business involves providing goods and services to others. It is also about interfacing with people. This involves human qualities as well as human nature. It all comes down to character and integrity. Are they truthful and honest? Are they honest in all they do? Are they able to put your needs before their own? The Center for Creative Leadership lists integrity as the most important character strength leaders require, especially at the highest levels of an organization.

Integrity is more than just being transparent about what you do in your marketing campaigns. People who do this often have difficulty defining and practicing integrity. Integrity does not mean justifying wrong actions. Integrity does not mean pleasing people or telling them what they want to hear.

You should help people as a business professional by sharing what you know with them. Integrity is an ethical foundation based on honesty, truthfulness and integrity. Integrity is not about revealing secrets or putting at risk the integrity of other people or their businesses. Integrity is doing the right thing for right reasons, even when no one is watching. Are you truly responsible for your actions? Are you the same person at home and at work, in public or private? Are you authentic and consistent in your thinking, behavior and actions? Integrity means keeping a promise even when it is costly.

A business that is honest and conducts its affairs with integrity will not tolerate shady deals, defective products or hidden agendas. False data, falsifying records, misrepresenting facts, or misleading advertising are all unacceptable. Others will evaluate and judge you and your business. It’s not what you tell others about your business and yourself that will last. It is what other people see after observing and experiencing your business firsthand.

Your business is your life. It’s not what we do but who and how we treat others that will make us memorable. Your business’ reputation is at risk and the truth will eventually come out. Confucius once said, “I used to trust that men would do what I told them.” Now I listen to his words, and take note of his actions.
