Clan History of Macleod Tartan

Eighth chief Alasdair Crottach (“the”hump-backed”) was able to avoid deportation and imprisonment at a time when the other chiefs of islands were slandered.

Furthermore, in 1542 he was granted an inheritance to the land of Trotternish — which was at one point in dispute with those of the Macdonalds from Sleat.

Alasdair constructed the fairy tower of Dunvegan and also rebuilt the Church at Rodel in Harris which is in which he was buried. The church and the tomb of Alasdair are thought to be two of the most beautiful monuments found in the Hebrides.

Alasdair never shied away from a match of the wits of Royals. When he visited James V, the king demanded that Alasdair admit that there was no thing in the Isles that could rival the elegance in the Royal Court.

Macleod responded that he had the most exquisite candlesticks and table than the King. James got invited to Dunvegan. In Dunvegan, Alasdair had arranged an elaborate feast on top of a hill, known as Macleod’s Tables’. The lighting for the meal was provided by a multitude of clansmen dressed in full regalia and carrying torches. The king acknowledged defeat.

Alasdair’s oldest son, William, succeeded him in 1547, but died shortly following. The daughter of William, Mary, under the care of the Earl of Argyll. Mayr’s kinsman Iain Dubh seized the chiefship and killed his adversaries.

He was the ruler of Dunvegan until 1559, when the chief fled to Ireland and was and was pursued by agents of the Crown. He was executed shortly afterward.

Mary gave her right to her grandfather Norman who was her next chief. His child, Ruaraidh (“Rory”) Mor was the 15th chief in 1595, and was knighted in 1596 to the rank of a knight by James VI. Ruaraidh has been described as the “very powerful and lordly ruler”.

Fighting for the Royalists during the Civil Wars, the eighteenth chief led the Macleods to England. More than five hundred clansmen perished during the Battle of Worcester in 1651 which was a significant victory for the Cromwellians. In the wake of this loss, the family did not want to take part in the 1715 Uprising, although they were Stuart supporters.

The Chief Norman Macleod of Dunvegan bluntly did not support his cause for the Bonnie Prince in the year 1945 due to the absence of a functioning French army.

Actually, the different members of the family were divided. A number of Macleods including those from the Macleods who were from Raasay (inheritors of Siol Torquil) were a part of the Jacobites. Dunvegan actually forged independent Highland companies to support the Hanoverian side, and was the leader of 500 soldiers in the support of the Government in the Battle of Inverurie.

In the final, the chief’s decision protected the clan’s estates from being confiscated and ransacked in the aftermath of Culloden.

Dunvegan Castle remains in existence and has been restored and renovated. It also has Victorian additions. The Associated Clan MacLeod Societies (ACMS) is based in Edinburgh and manages the activities of ten Clan societies across the globe.

The Fairy Flag (Am Bratach Sith) is a heirloom belonging to the clan’s chiefs MacLeod displayed on display at Dunvegan Castle. Made of finely woven silk, the flag’s colors can be found in green (or brown) and is about 18″ square.

It’s decorated with the remnants of red markings that may be the source for the first “flaming mountains” MacLeod coat of arms. According to the legend, it was given as a present by the fairy gods to a young chieftain, or perhaps an offer to the chief by the fairy-lover who had left; maybe it was also the reward for defeating the evil spirits.

According to legend, it has the ability to expand the army of the clan, to protect some clan members’ lives, and perform other miraculous feats.

The Clan legend states it was lowered in several battles in the period between the 15th and 16th centuries. each giving victory to the Macleods.

The legend says that the flag brought down a fire at Dunvegan Castle in the 19th century. In the Second World War, airmen conducting bombing missions benefited by displaying the flag

The exact source of the banner is not clear. It may be a relic of some kind, possibly taken home during the Crusades. The tales surrounding it may be memories that are hazy and tangential to Viking raven banners from the 9th and 11th century.

Every new chief of the MacLeods must drink to Rory Mor’s memory by draining a great drinking horn that once belonged to the chief. The horn holds a bottle and a half of wine and the new chief is required to drain it in one go “without setting down or falling down”.
