Meet the 27-Year-Old Latinx Entrepreneur Who’s worth $220 Million

Daniella Pierson, who founded the women-focused newsmagazine company The Newsette when she was 19 years old, is among the wealthiest women of race across the U.S.; at 27 years old, she is younger than any self-made female entrepreneur with an estimated nine-figure fortune.

A Latinx founding member, Pierson built The Newsette from a bare beginning to reach 40 million in revenue and profit margins of 10 million or more in the last fiscal year, she claims. Several months before, she distributed a small portion of The Newsette to an investor in a deal valued The Newsette at around $200 million. This is the first money from outside she’s ever taken (besides the $15,000 loan she received from her grandparents that she later repaid), and she’s The Newsette’s largest shareholder.

She’s also co-founder and co-CEO of the less than a year-old business in mental health called Wondermind, along with actress and singer Selena Gomez and Mandy Teefey (CEO of Kicked to the Curb Productions and Gomez’s mother). According to Forbes estimates, when combined with money and other investments, her stake in the company places her net worth at around $220 million.

Pierson, who turned 27 last week, is ten years older than Lucy Guo, the richest under 30 BIPOC women on  2022’s list of America’s most successful Self-made Women. Guo is turning 28. In October, the technology company Scale AI appeared on Forbes’ list of $440 million. The only self-made woman included on Forbes’ list is Kylie Jenner. Forbes listing younger than Pierson was Kylie Jenner, who just turned 25 on the 10th of August.

While Pierson was a freshman at Boston University in 2015, she didn’t have time to check out her top websites, so she decided to design a newsletter to curate the latest business, culture, beauty, and wellness content that she and her fellow students would like to browse through. The first time she told people that she was an intern for a famous company creating newsletters. “I was hesitant to declare I was the company’s founder,” she explains, partly due to her lack of confidence. She briskly printed copies and put them in common areas and the lobbies of the campus buildings.

It wasn’t until her graduation that Pierson began to solicit advertising. The company’s revenues increased between $1 million and $7 million in 2019 to $7 million by 2020 and $40 million by 2021. This was due to advertising partners Bumble, Fidelity, Old Navy, Twitter, and Walmart. She was named onto the Forbes Under 30 list in the Media category in 2020 at 24.

Her free newsletter, which combines information and hyperlinks to articles on topics such as natural cosmetics- has more than 500,000 readers, mostly women aged 18 to 35. It’s brighter than Daily Skimm, with an irreverent style similar to Morning Brew’s weekly email. Subscribers earn points when they refer new readers using a personal referral code. Inside Newsette also founded an agency for creatives called Newland, which develops TikTok channels for its clients, and assists clients find influencers who can help market their brands. The newsletter maven is delighted with her success, but she’s open about her inability to be the typical successful businesswoman. “I suffer from OCD along with depression. I was a lousy schoolmate,” she confesses.

Her mother was a poor child in Colombia and later was a dentist. She father of her, who was born living in Niagara Falls, New York, is the owner of a car dealership in Jacksonville, Florida, where Pierson was educated. When she was a child, Pierson was troubled with sleeping and disturbed by the presence of black tape covering one end of her mattress, but it wasn’t on the other side. It was not even. There were rituals she developed, such as checking under the bed to see if she felt it “felt appropriate.” When she was in her health class at high school, she realized during her study of mental health issues that she was suffering from OCD. “I was thought to be the dumber twin of the class valedictorian,” she says. Her twin sister writes under the pseudonym Alex Aster, went to the University of Pennsylvania, graduated in summa cum Laure, has a following of 100 million on TikTok (making it one of the most popular writers on social media platforms), and has written two popular books for young adults, one of which is currently being developed into a film with Universal and the creators of the movie Twilight.

Pierson did not take therapy with OCD before her senior year of college. Her GPA was less than 2.0 during the 2nd semester of her junior year, and she was afraid she’d be exiled from school if she failed to get her grades back up. Along with the bed and looking at it, “I would slam my hands against the ground-that became part of the ritual, but so intense that the hands began bleeding,” she recalls. “I was crying each day for the next three weeks.” She knew she required help, but her parents were not believers in the therapists. Through some of the earnings from affiliate programs received via The Newsette, she paid to consult a therapist who prescribed Prozac, which, combined with some cognitive behavior therapy, changed her life. She was on the dean’s list in her senior year and received most of her A’s.

“Danny and I share that we don’t want to ignore the hard stuff,” says her sister Aster. “She is a rock star and is so successful,” however, not everything was effortless. Aster was initially rejected by various publishers and ended her relationship with her agent before pitching her book via TikTok. This led to an auction between the publishers and then a 6-figure advance. The sisters have been close and assisted each other in the past with their writing. Aster was a copy editor for The Newsette for Pierson every morning during the beginning, and Pierson was the first to read Aster’s chapters. “I believe in her opinions over anyone else,” Aster says. In a state of extreme, Pierson says she took her first two-week vacation in the last four years in March. “I could not unwind,” she says. “Nothing can bring me as much satisfaction as building businesses.” But she claims her OCD has changed but hasn’t gone away. She’s learned to manage her anxiety but hopefully, become an inspirational figure to others.

“I do not want anyone with medical issues with their mental wellbeing to rule their chances of becoming successful,” states Pierson. “I am determined to prove to people that success doesn’t have to appear different.”

We want to make it accessible to everyone.”

What is it that makes the Dragonfly the definition of a “hyperscooter?” A key characteristic is a design based on Formula 1, dubbed “Full-Tilt Technology”, with the three-dimensional tilt and twist controls mounted on the central pillar that engages all four wheels simultaneously in sync with the movement of the user.

It is equipped with what they claim to be the first dual wishbone suspension. It’s fully adjustable hydraulic dampened suspension with sprung across all 4 wheels. a flexible deck suspension, and complete axle articulation.

The Dragonfly’s four-wheel, comprehensive carbon fiber platform has been made to provide safety and stability.

Two 500-watt motors power it. They provide approximately 37 miles of range based on the weight of the rider and wind conditions, with an average speed of 25 miles/hour. It even has a reverse gear, which is unusual for the scooter.

D-Fly eventually found a new manufacturer, set up a new design team in North America and developed a global team. However, the challenges of launching the Dragonfly were not over.

As time passed, the company realized that the market for electric scooters was shifting, which led to an even more thorough re-thinking of the Dragonfly.
