Students are captivated by the sky-high thrills of the UAF drone center

Published

on

Students

The Delta Junction Junior High School classroom could be crowded even with the students running around. The kids’ energy only added to the busyness.

Nick Adkins quickly got their attention Nick Adkins was able to grab their attention, however. He was there to show them some facts about drones, not just the tiny quad-copters they are all familiar with. Adkins is the operations director for the Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute. His visit to Delta school — the home for the Grizzlies -was part of the ACUASI’s initiatives to encourage young people to become involved in engineering, science, engineering, and math.

Adkins often, with another ACUASI Team member, traveled across Alaska as part of the outreach mission of the center.

Delta Junction is just one of the many stops along Adkins’s flight route. He has been on numerous visits to Galena, the Yukon River community 270 miles east of Fairbanks and away from the road system. He was there with students from the District’s Sidney C. Huntington School and from The Galena Interior Learning Academy, which draws students from all over Alaska.

Adkins has also returned for trips at Camp Fire Alaska, 750 miles south of Fairbanks in Cooper Landing on the Kenai Peninsula. He also spoke to Nenana students, about an hour’s drive southwest from Fairbanks. He also hopes to visit Nulato, the community located downriver from Galena.

“The true fun is simply because bulb carries on,” Adkins stated. “You meet a kid who’s been utterly uninvolved in such things, and you hand the child a drone to construct with these small, grueling pieces, and they appear to sparkle. Suddenly, the child has all these parts and pieces before them, and then is, well, they’ve got a drone that can fly.

“You see them understand that they just found anything they’re proficient at, and they didn’t know these were proficient at it because perhaps they didn’t mature in a family that operates on things, said the man. “People grow up in different ways.”

The students ACUASI has today could be on their way toward a career in the booming drone industry, Adkins stated. He pointed to his visit to Galena as an instance. “These students are 14 and 15 years of age, and they have a genuine chance of working in the drone industry once they escape,” he stated. “There’s an unemployed young man who was about to graduate with a drone pilot’s certificate. I could have gotten him straight after graduating high school.”

In mid-July, Delta junior high librarian Norm Cosgrove ran an educational session for summer school students on drones for four days.

Students

On day No. 2, Cosgrove handed over his school’s Creative Cafe to Adkins. This Creative Cafe is a single large room home to libraries, classes in art, and the innovation station that features a 3D printer and the Cricut cutters.

Before letting the students play in the drone flight simulators using two computers, Adkins led them through the training and regulation aspects. The experience isn’t as impressive as a simulator or operating tiny drones, but the students sitting on couches and in the middle had to be attentive. Hands were often in the air when Adkins asked an inquiry or discussed the skills they’d require to perfect to manage to move the test of the Federal Aviation Administration for recreational drone pilots.

There’s more to exploring drones than drones. Cosgrove admitted that even though the time spent learning about drones seems like a camping experience but it’s a school for summer because the curriculum includes reading, math, and writing. Cosgrove is also the director of his school’s Flight Club, which got established after one of his students came to him in 2011 to ask for assistance in assembling a drone which was a gift from Santa.

“We’ve been involved with ACUASI for quite a few decades,” Cosgrove explained. “It’s ideal for these kids to see what drones may do and the possible jobs with drones.”

Cosgrove directed out one of many students.

“The tiny man here’s thinking about applying drones at his family’s farm,” he explained. “They are 12- and 13-year-old young ones thinking of approaches to use this technology.”

Cosgrove is also a regular visitor for students — including those attending the summer school and those in Flight Club — to ACUASI’s hangar, located on the East Ramp of Fairbanks International Airport. This is where they can view the principal ACUASI planes: SeaHunter, which has a 16-foot wingspan, and Sentry, which has a wingspan of 13 feet.

A trip to the town of Fort Yukon, about 150 miles north of Fairbanks, also showed an additional benefit of ACUASI’s outreach program: spending time with adults after working with students.

“We slept properly into the evening so the neighborhood can be found and see what we’re up to,” Adkins stated.

The money for this outreach is provided by The Federal Aviation Administration and from ACUASI.

The FAA depends on its partners to spread the message about aviation. And one of these methods includes the organization’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Aviation and Space Education Program.

CAUSE is a unique organization with its motivations for wanting to reach out to the general public, especially the young Alaskans.

“We want to provide value to the state of Alaska,” Adkins declared. “Are we engaged in solving a real issue that requires a solution? We believe that large cargo transport is a challenge in Alaska. CAUSE has been working on this, and we think the students we’re speaking to could be a part of this field.”
