To redefine the higher educational system, we must eliminate inequities. After two years dedicated to virtual webinars, some of which have tested our patience and interest, the UNESCO’s World Higher Education Conference in Barcelona that ended on May 20th was a breath of fresh air.

It was more than just a networking event. WHEC 2022 provided more than just a chance to meet old friends, network, and share views about higher education’s urgent challenges.

It was a chance to reflect on the experiences that higher educational institutions, academics, and students have been through in the course of the epidemic and to consider what we can all strive to be and be in the current age of sustainable growth.

Through a series of panels and discussions about inequality in access to education, access to it and the gap in participation and achievement in higher education were all under the spotlight.

In my personal HED presentation, which was entitled “Is higher education doomed with inequalities,” I examined the ways inequalities may be built up across all educational levels, in both informal and formal educational settings, and in the intersection of gender or age, language and ethnic backgrounds, socio-economic parents’ backgrounds, and the migration patterns of students.

Higher education institutions reflect the current conditions of our society. At this conference, the most talked about topic focused on the gulf between lower and higher socio-economic groups and their rights to access and participation in higher education.

The reality is that the price of attending university has been increasing, and many students are graduating with debt that is too big to manage. For instance, in the United Kingdom, the tuition cost has been growing by 238% in less than two decades, and it’s likely to become nearly impossible for families with lower incomes to afford a college education.

Some students at the conference expressed concern about the blatant failures of their government in providing the opportunity and resources for students with low socio-economic backgrounds or from rural areas.

A number of them were grateful for their private scholarships. However, they claimed that it meant that their government did not implement the Abidjan Principles for The Right to Education, an issue I brought up during an event on privatization and access to education. As reported in a separate report from University World News.

Without a solution for these disparities, we risk closing out a new generation of brilliant, innovative people and depriving our communities of the majority of our collective wisdom.

In addition, the disparities in higher education are apparent as evidenced by the digital divide, which was felt by around 800 million youngsters worldwide, and resulted in an 11.8 percent and eight percentage drop-out rate for young women and men within the European Union during the pandemic.

There was also concern about the gender gap and job opportunities associated with various degrees. For instance, STEM fields (science, engineering, technology, and math) are becoming more and more popular and have higher employment opportunities, yet more young males than females attract them.

Vocational training, as an example, can’t be a viable alternative for those with lower socio-economic backgrounds because the higher educational systems we have direct students to vocational schools because they are less expensive and a quick entry point to the workforce.

Additionally, those who are disadvantaged, have rural indigenous, ethnic, minority linguistic groups, and Students of LGBTQI+ are also subject to the development of inequalities both in the formal and informal settings of education.

Students living in rural areas typically have to travel a long distance to get to the universities, which may be extremely difficult. They may also have to not take advantage of opportunities, for instance, being on the university team for sports and participating in extracurricular activities, which could make them more likely to be unable to complete their studies.

For these students and the rest of us, academic support at all levels of education and in formal and informal environments is essential. In addition, we must offer pastoral assistance both in the classroom and at the institutional level and eliminate stereotypes throughout all educational institutions, including higher education.

The transformation and redesign of higher education.

There was a consensus regarding “reinventing higher education,” as the UNESCO Roadmap unveiled during the conference.

Regarding the issue of equity in access and success within higher learning, the document further stated it was a fact that “cannot be seen as a luxury or an afterthought.”

Admission policies for higher education and institutional culture and classroom pedagogies, assessments and financing, and governance need to be changed to adopt an inter-disciplinary and holistic approach to learning, thus encouraging critical thinking and peace, democratic values, and humanism.

We must shift our four Ps. A concept that I developed and suggested in my HED talk at the start of this conference. The transformation of higher education requires a shift in our beliefs, practices, practices, policies, and involvement in financing and governance.

What is considered essential and not crucial and valued in our societies has to be shifted away from a belief system, which altered the meaning and purpose of higher education since the late 1970s, which I have argued in my recent book.

Policies and practices must be reformed to promote equality, diversity, and fairness across a lifetime course by taking a multi-level, intersectoral approach. Research in higher education should illuminate the way.

Innovative educational models and open educational platforms can fill some of the inequities and gaps I have mentioned earlier. However, issues related to ethics equity, equity, equality, sustainable development, and social justice must be addressed before choosing online or private education; otherwise, we’re likely to see inequality continue to be present in both the physical and digital worlds.
